Why We Chose Portimão as Our Home in the Algarve
When people first begin researching the Algarve, they often focus on the destinations that appear most frequently in travel guides and property searches. Lagos, Vilamoura, Albufeira and Tavira all attract plenty of attention, and for good reason.
But when it came to choosing where we wanted to build our lives, raise our family and grow our business, we chose Portimão.
Now, after more than seven years living here, we're still convinced it was the right decision.
As estate agents, we're often asked where the best place to live in the Algarve is. The honest answer is that there isn't one. Every buyer has different priorities, whether that's beaches, schools, golf, marina living, investment potential or simply finding a community where they feel at home.
What we can share is why Portimão worked so well for us, and why we continue to believe it offers one of the best balances of lifestyle, convenience and authenticity in the Algarve.
A Real Portuguese City
One of the first things that attracted us to Portimão was that it feels like a real Portuguese city rather than a resort that comes alive only during the summer months.
While tourism is undoubtedly important here, particularly around Praia da Rocha, Portimão remains a thriving city with a year-round population, schools, healthcare facilities, local businesses, sports clubs and community organisations.
Life doesn't simply stop when the holidaymakers leave.
Restaurants remain open. Local events continue. Children go to school. Businesses operate throughout the year.
For anyone considering a permanent move to Portugal rather than simply purchasing a holiday home, that year-round energy can make a significant difference to everyday life.
Some of the Algarve's Most Beautiful Beaches
Of course, one of the major advantages of living in Portimão is having easy access to some of the most spectacular beaches in Europe.
Praia da Rocha is known around the world for its dramatic golden cliffs and expansive stretch of sand, while nearby beaches such as Praia do Vau, Prainha and Praia dos Três Castelos each offer their own unique charm.
Even after all these years, there are still moments when we're walking along the coastline and are reminded just how fortunate we are to call this place home.
Whether it's an early morning walk, a family day at the beach or simply watching the sunset after work, the coastline remains one of the greatest benefits of living here.
Everything You Need Is Within Reach
One of Portimão's greatest strengths is convenience.
The city offers excellent infrastructure, including shopping centres, supermarkets, healthcare facilities, gyms, sports clubs, restaurants, cafés and a wide range of professional services.
Faro Airport is less than an hour away, making travel to and from Portugal straightforward, while the A22 motorway provides easy access across the Algarve.
Unlike some smaller towns, you rarely find yourself needing to travel elsewhere for everyday essentials.
For many of our clients who are relocating from overseas, that balance between lifestyle and practicality is incredibly important.
More Than Beaches: A City That Celebrates Community
One of the things we have come to appreciate most about Portimão is the sense of community that exists throughout the year.
The city hosts a fantastic calendar of events, festivals and activities that bring both residents and visitors together.
The annual Sardine Festival is one of the Algarve's most popular events, celebrating the city's fishing heritage with riverside dining, live music and a vibrant atmosphere. Throughout the summer, Portimão also hosts major concerts, cultural celebrations and sporting events, while the nearby Algarve International Circuit attracts international motorsport fans with events such as the Superbike World Championship.
Beyond the headline events, there are local markets, Christmas celebrations, sporting activities, charity events and community gatherings taking place throughout the year.
These occasions help create something that many people moving abroad are looking for — a genuine sense of belonging.
Better Value Than Many Buyers Expect
Property values across the Algarve have increased significantly over recent years, reflecting the region's growing popularity among both international and domestic buyers.
However, Portimão continues to offer excellent value compared to many of the Algarve's more exclusive locations.
Whether you're searching for a modern apartment, a family villa, a lock-up-and-leave holiday property or an investment opportunity, there is a wide range of options available across different budgets.
Many buyers are pleasantly surprised by what they can still achieve in Portimão compared with other sought-after coastal locations across Southern Europe.
A Place Where We Could Build a Life
Ultimately, our decision wasn't based solely on beaches, infrastructure or property prices.
It was about quality of life.
Portimão gave us the opportunity to create the lifestyle we were looking for while becoming part of the local community.
Bruna's experience as a professional interpreter, working between Portuguese and English, has given her a deep understanding of the challenges international buyers and sellers can face when navigating a foreign property market. Meanwhile, as someone who relocated from the UK, I've experienced first-hand many of the questions, practical considerations and opportunities that come with making Portugal your home.
Together, those experiences help us guide clients through the process with both local knowledge and personal understanding.
Why Portimão Was Right for Our Family
When we made the decision to move to Portugal, we weren't looking for a place to spend a few weeks a year.
We were looking for somewhere to build a future.
Portimão offered exactly that balance.
As a family, we wanted to embrace Portuguese life rather than simply observe it from the outside. We wanted to become part of the community, learn from the culture and create lasting roots.
One of the most important factors in our decision was our daughter.
We wanted her to grow up experiencing Portuguese life first-hand, attending a Portuguese school, learning the language naturally and developing friendships within the local community. Watching her thrive within the Portuguese education system and seeing the opportunities that experience has given her has only reinforced that we made the right choice.
Living in Portimão has allowed us to enjoy everything the Algarve is famous for while remaining connected to the realities of everyday Portuguese life.
It's a city where local traditions remain strong. Where families gather in public squares and cafés. Where community events bring people together. And where newcomers who genuinely want to integrate are welcomed.
Looking back, Portimão gave us exactly what we hoped to find when we made the move to Portugal: an exceptional quality of life, a welcoming community and a place where we could build both a family life and a successful business.
For us, Portimão wasn't simply somewhere to buy a property.
It became home.
Thinking About Making the Move?
Every buyer's journey is different, and the Algarve offers a wide variety of locations, each with its own unique character.
But if you're looking for a place that combines stunning beaches, practical amenities, year-round community life and a genuinely authentic Portuguese atmosphere, Portimão deserves to be high on your list.
Having made the move ourselves, we understand many of the questions that come with relocating to Portugal and would be delighted to share our experiences.
